Analysis of the use of media language

'Paradise' by George Ezra

Use of colour:
The video uses mainly red, blue, black and white. The choice of colour is very important in a music video as it creates emotions for the audience subconsciously. For example red= danger or love, blue= calm, black=corruption, death, white= innocence and purity. In this video, the use of colour doesn't seem to be used to provoke a specific emotion but simply for aesthetic and imagery. The video also uses a high contrast making the video appear very 'clean' and 'studio-like' through the use of lighting.

'Say Amen', 'This is Gospel' and 'Emperor's New Clothes' by Panic at the Disco

Continuous narrative:
These three music videos all share the same narrative. They were not released chronologically and the link between the three was discovered by fans after each was released. Although this is not a technique I can use in my coursework it did make me consider narrative and the affect of different locations and not necessarily using chronological order.

This is similarly done with  'All I Want' by Kodaline. The first part features a story following a man with a face deformity and his journey and experience with liking a girl that at first doesn't like him back. The second part follows him looking for his dog when it runs away. This continuous storyline allows the audience to connect strongly with the characters and fall in love with their personality. The way Kodaline has done this is slightly different to Panic as the song is the same and they were related chronologically. Although this is not an effect I can use for my video it did help me realise the importance of allowing the audience to connect with the characters and how important that is when building a narrative.

'High Hopes' by Kodaline

Change in order of events to create emotion:
When first watching the video you assume one thing but after rethinking the video the audience can see that the order of events is different than first anticipated. Firstly the audience thinks that the man is in hospital due to the shooting however due to the sock on the woman's hand it can be interpreted as he is in hospital due to his suicidal attempt at the start of video and the scenes in the video have been a hallucination. This change in events allows the audience to feel the heartbreak of the video twice, once when they watch it and both characters are shot and after when the audience realise only the woman died and has been taken from the man. The use of allowing the audience to rethink the video creates more significance to them and makes sure they don't just watch it passively.

'Wildfire' by Seafret

Narrative not necessarily linking to the music:
This music video was done very differently, the directors conducted a study based off a past psychological study and used this as the music video. There was text over the top to show what the participants were saying and the video could have been used without Seafret's music as a informative video. Although the video did not perfectly match the lyrics it did match the theme, the song being called 'Wildfire' referring to love and the study looking at if strangers can fall in love based off a few questions and eye contact. Despite not being able to do this for my music video because my video must have a narrative linked to the lyrics, it does raise ideas surrounding non-fictional storylines.
