'Dream' music video- First impressions

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AAhc4auA7A&safe=active - 'Dream' by Dizzee Rascal music video.

First impressions:

  • The music video has a vintage feel which contrasts with what we would expect from the genre of music.
  • The use of puppets creates a creepy feel to the video.
  • The video reflects a children's TV show, this is shown by the pianist.
  • The setting created for the puppets (a street scene) also contrasts with the genre of music and the idea of it being a show for children.
  • Once again, the suggested police brutality scene is also unexpected from the original perspective we get from the video.
  • Having a woman as the pianist is unexpected as women are usually presented as lower down in the media, having her as the largest and introducing Dizzee creates the idea of her being in charge which is atypical for most media products.
  • The police that beat the black puppet are white, shows that there is some idea of representation within the video and suggestions about racism.
  • We usually expect puppets to be presented benevolently, especially in a children's show, the darker/ more mature themes used for the puppets come as a surprise.
