Three-act structure

The Three-act structure is a structure used in narrative texts that divides a story into three parts. It consists of the Setup, the Confrontation and the Resolution.

The Setup:
  •  Establishes main characters
  • Their relationships
  • The environment
  • A question/ quest is set up to represent what will happen in the rest of the film
The Confrontation:
  • Protagonist's first attempt to resolve the problem
  • Which worsens the situation
  • This may be they don't have the skills required
  • They then learn the new skills which grows their awareness of who they are, this is known as the Character Arc
The Resolution:
  • Features the resolution of the story
  • The dramatic question is answered
  • A sense of moral purpose is restored
