'Straight Outta Compton' film- distribution and circulation
In today's lesson we looked at the film 'Straight outta Compton' which focuses on the group NWA and their struggle and rise to fame. The film was released in 2015 and is set in Los Angeles in the mid 1980s. The group NWA is created due to the racial discrimination and disadvantaged economics where they live, this causes them to be known as 'The World's most Dangerous Group' as their group fights against the social injustice they experience. The film is based on the real story of when the group got together and reflects how the group were treated.
The poster for the movie features the group walking down a road with the 'Straight outta Compton' logo above their heads. On of the main features of the poster is that it is in black and white. This reflects that the film is about racism and shows that the film focuses on a serious topic. The black and white links to Levi Strauss' idea about binary opposites and how there is going to be a clear divide in the movie showing two sides. The group's names are placed above the logo, the effect of having their names on the poster shows the audience what the film is about. As the group is famous the audience may recognise the names and therefore want to watch the film. The outfits the group are wearing in the poster reflect their culture and what they stand for showing what side they will be on in the film. During the 1980s racism was still carried out in America and the culture the group lived was looked down upon by people like the police, the film focuses on this and shows their point of view and what the group did to try and make a difference.

In the lesson we watched the movie trailer:
Whilst watching the movie trailer we focused on the representation of:
- The characters
- The setting
- The time period
- Their music
- Their message
The advert portrays the film as more exciting and inspiring rather than serious about the issues it faces. This is done by showing mainly face paced shots and scenes which show a more positive message then the one we expect. The advert tells us that the movie was created by two very big companies; Universal and Legendary. For the audience to see these names creates a sudden sense that the film will be good as these companies already have a good reputation. As the film focuses on the 1980s we can assume that the audience is focused towards anyone who can relate to that time or are big fans of the group and enjoy their music.

Their website links very closely to the theme they have for all their adverts, creating a recognisable brand for the film.
In 2015 Beats by Dr Dre (a member of NWA) started a campaign to allow anyone to show support for where they live. The campaign focused on the 'Straight outta Compton' logo and allowed people to fill in their city. It became one of the most popular hash tags of 2015, many celebrities got involved including Obama.
