Who owns the press?

Alexander Lebedev:

Lebedev was born on the 16th December 1959 in Moscow. In March 2012 a magazine (Forbes magazine) announced him one of the richest Russians, with a estimated fortune of $1.1 billion however his fortune has since been declined and he is no longer considered a billionaire. He is the part owner of the Russian newspaper 'Novaya Gazeta' (which is one of the most vocal newspapers critical of the current Russian Government) and owns two British newspapers with his son Evgeny Lebedev: 'the London Evening Standard' and 'The Independent'.

His background:

He grew up in Moscow and his parents were a part of the Moscow intelligentsia (which is a status class of educated people engaged in the complex mental labours that critique, guide, and lead in shaping the culture and politics of their society.) His father was an elite athlete and later a professor at Moscow's highest technical school. His mother worked in a rural Sakhalin school and later taught English in a Moscow tertiary school.
From 1977 to 1982 Alexander went to the Moscow State Institute of International Relations.

Political views:

'The Independent' was sold to Alexander Lebedev in 2010. The newspaper described itself as 'free from party political bias, free from proprietorial influence'. When the paper was established in 1986 the founders wanted it's political views to reflect the centre of the British political spectrum. Some would describe the paper as slightly left winged however it does feature a conservative columnist. The newspaper often takes a classic liberal, pro-market stance on economic views. In 2013 the editor referred to the newspaper as a 'proudly liberal newspaper'.

Other companies they're involved with:
Lebedev has a long history of helping out charities and created an organization named Charitable Reserve Fund. He sponsors and helps with many other charities, a few are:
Burdenko Military Hospital
Center for Children's Hematology and Transplantology
Museum of Mikhail Bulgakov in Kiev

Have they ever been involved in any controversy?

In September 2011 Lebedev punched a fellow guest (Sergei Polonsky) on a Russian television programme. Lebedev claimed afterwards that he had reacted to Polonsky's threat of violence towards him and was later charged with hooliganism and sentenced to community service.

Last year, Alexander's wife (Elena Perminova) posted a instagram video of her applying lipstick to her daughter, some argued that the child was shaking her head. The video sparked controversy and comments were disabled for the video.
