Sound

Sound is one of the most important ways to create a story in a media text. It allows the story to move along and let the audience know what is happening without them having to see anything.

There are six types of sound:

  • Non-diagetic- Sound the characters can't hear
  • Music
  • Diagetic- Sound in the scene
  • Dialogue
  • Foley-Sound a human makes
  • Sound effects
In the lesson we focused on a movie clip and listened for the different sounds used.

Sounds used:
  • Intense music
  • Metal door opening
  • Police sirens
  • Glass breaking
  • Airplanes taking off
  • Lorry horn
  • Explosions
  • Groaning
  • Seatbelt click
  • Loading a gun
  • Airport speaker
  • Buttons on phone/key board
  • Dialogue (ADR- Actual Dialogue Replacement)
All these sounds added to the setting, allowed the story to move along and created emotion and tension for the audience.
