Semiotics

Semiotics is the study of signs and symbols. These can be used in media to symbolise something for example a woman in a red dress could symbolise danger, sex or love. Producers can use semiotics to try and portray something to their audience. Semiotics are often used in adverts to convey to the audience what using that product could do for them and to sell the product.

For example:

The colour pink- Love, girly/feminine, love, soft, natural.
The flower- Innocence, beauty, natural, feminine.
Wearing no clothes- Sexual, natural, confidence.
Eyes looking straight at the camera- Confidence, intriguing, intimate.
Bow on the bottle- Feminine, put together, organised.
Orange on the perfume- Sunsets, energising.
The font- Girly, slightly old fashioned, fancy, expensive brand.

From only the name of the brand we can still learn a lot about what the person making the advert wanted the reader to think when they saw the advert. From the advert we don't learn about where to buy the perfume, how much it is or how it smells however we may still be intrigued to buy it because of how we imagine it to be from the symbols on the adverts.
