1950s America

In todays lesson we looked at different adverts from the 1950s, we mostly focused on adverts representing women.

The 1950s were just after WW2 where women had to take over men's jobs as they were away and couldn't do them. This was one of the first times women realised they were just as capable as men at doing work. They would do things like fixing cars and working in factories. After the men came back they took over their jobs again and left the women to be housewives. In the 1950s there was also a baby boom as the men had just returned from war. During this time America had come out of the war quite wealthy as a lot of people owed them money, meaning Americans became a lot more wealthy and products like vacuum cleaners and irons were advertised. These were mostly aimed at women and were incredibly sexist. Here are some examples:

We also focused on a song talking about how everyone is the same and have the same experiences. It talks about the house in the white suburbs and how they look like plain boxes. The song also talks about 'ticky-tacky' which is sellotape holding the houses together. This represents how their lives and immature and fragile, it also could symbolise how Americans are trying to build this imaginary perfect life, just like a cardboard box and sellotape.
